The first Bypass Surgery in the Maldives

August 9, 2018

The first Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG),  in the Maldives

The first Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), more commonly known as Bypass Surgery, in the Maldives, was carried out at ADK Hospital on 08th August 2018. Alhamdulillah, the surgery was completed successfully on a 54 years old Maldivian man who presented to ADK Hospital with a heart attack.  He is currently recovering in our HITECC Coronary Care Unit.

A heart attack or ischemic heart disease occurs when the blood vessels (coronary arteries) supplying oxygen and nutrients to the heart itself gets partially or completely blocked. In some of these cases, the treatment is angioplasty, where a stent is placed at the Cathlab, within the blocked blood vessel to reopen it.

Sometimes the amount and severity of the block may not allow a stent to be successfully placed. Those cases may require surgery.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft is the surgical procedure in which a blood vessel (a graft) taken from elsewhere on the body (usually the leg) of the same patient is connected to the blocked coronary blood vessels bridging or bypassing the blocked part of the coronary artery. Sometimes more than one coronary artery many require bypass.

The surgery was performed by a team led by the 1st Maldivian Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Mohamed Shafiu.
