Hyperbaric Treatment Unit - Booklet

January 8, 2023

HYPERBARIC TREATMENT UNIT

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a specialized treatment that
uses a combination of elevated ambient pressure and concentrated
oxygen.
The Hyperbaric Treatment Unit (HTU) at ADK Hospital uses Monoplace
HBOT chambers from Perry Baromedical, USA, a global leader in
Hyperbaric equipment and design.
These equipment sets ADK Hospital apart, as the first and only
hospital with HBOT.

TREATMENTS

DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS
HBOT is an effective treatment, especially if provided early, for
decompression sickness associated with SCUBA diving accidents.
NON-HEALING WOUNDS
HBOT helps improve oxygenation, vascular regeneration, control of
wound infection; all that facilitate healing of chronic would that
maybe associated with diabetes, pressure injury, radiation, etc.
GAS GANGRENE, NECROTIZING FASCIITIS,
OSTEOMYELITIS, NEUROSURGICAL INFECTIONS AND
FUNGAL INFECTIONS
HBOT is both a primary and adjuvant therapy that controls difficult
to handle infections.

BURNS

HBOT enhances oxygenation, prevention of infections and healing
in wounds caused by burns and scalding.
HYPO-PERFUSION VASCULAR PROBLEMS
HBOT can be a temporary treatment, to increase oxygenation to
hypo-perfused tissue by dissolving more oxygen in plasma and
tissue, until definitive treatment to restore vascular supply can be
carried out. Death of tissue and amputation of limbs may be
spared in some cases.

SMOKE, CARBON MONOXIDE, HYDROGEN SULPHIDE,
CYANIDE POISONING & METHEMOGLOBINEMIA
Fire victims and fire-fighters exposed to toxic fumes and gases can
be saved by HBOT.
SAVING SKIN GRAFT & TISSUE FLAPS
Plastic surgery procedures with low success rate can be improved
with HBOT by increasing tissue oxygenation.

Additional HBOT applications are increasingly getting recognized
as emerging prospects for various conditions.
Sports Injuries
Stroke
Diffuse Axonal Injury
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Traumatic Brain Injury
Fibromyalgia
Spinal Cord Injury
Surgery Recovery
Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Multiple Sclerosis
Cerebral Palsy

HOW TREATMENTS ARE GIVEN

For Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, patient is placed comfortably
inside the chamber, in a lying or semireclined position for a period
of time.
The purpose for which the treatment is given determines the length
of a cycle of treatment and the pressure and concentration of
oxygen used.

The HBOT equipment is then set to deliver:
increased ambient pressure inside the chamber with a mixture
of air and oxygen to deliver the desired oxygen concentration
for a duration of time, returning to atmospheric conditions at
the end of the treatment cycle.
Multiple cycles are often needed.

HOW MANY SESSION IS NEEDED

Different conditions require different treatments. A cycle of
treatment may last from 20 minutes to 120 minutes. However, a
cycle is often set at about 60 minutes.
Depending on the indication, number of cycles or sessions may
vary between 1-40. The more severe the condition, often, the more
the number of sessions.
Plan can also be modified or tailored to the treatment outcomes
and improvements at an individual level.

PLANNING A TREATMENT & WHAT TO EXPECT

CONSULTING HBOT PHYSICIAN

Your doctor or a designated HBOT physician will provide a consultation
during which you will be evaluated for the treatment, ensure
there are no contraindications, select the most appropriate protocol
for you and take you through the process of therapy. You can
ask questions and clarify any doubts.

IN PREPARATION FOR HBOT SESSION

Ensure you do not have on your hair; hair spray, hair cream or
hair oil. There should be no elastic hair bands or velcro.
Remove all jewelry, rings, bands, ear-rings, studs, piercings,
necklaces, watches, etc.
Avoid any lotions, creams, perfume, cologne, petroleum jelly,
deodorant, nail polish or make up on you. If any of it is on your
body, we may need to have them rinsed off or sponged off
thoroughly.
Contact lenses, dentures and hearing aids are not allowed in
the chamber and must be removed.
No medication patch or wound dressing other than specifically
designated and provided by Hyperbaric Treatment Unit will be
allowed inside the chamber.
Female patients must remove menstrual pads. Tampons and
menstrual cups maybe allowed.
Patients are encouraged to use the toilet before getting in the
chamber.
The technician will ask and check to ensure these are followed.

CLOTHING

HBOT chambers have strict clothing restrictions. You will be asked to
remove ALL your clothing, including underwear, nylons, stockings,
socks, etc. and to wear only the provided gown. A designated blanket
will be provided.

FOOD & DRINKS

No food will be allowed inside the chamber. This includes chewing
gum and candies. Where appropriate, you will be allowed to take a
bottle of water to drink.
CORRECTIVE GLASSES
Where required, corrective glasses will be allowed in the chamber.
ANTI-STATIC BRACELET
Before you get placed inside the chamber a grounding bracelet will
be worn on your hand to prevent static electricity.

COMMUNICATION & ENTERTAINMENT

Two-way communication system will be demonstrated and tested
before your session starts. Once you are inside the chamber, the
door will be closed and sealed. You can simply communicate with
the technician by talking without needing to do anything via the
two-way-communication system. Your choice or audio or
audio-visual entertainment can be provided.

READING MATERIAL

We do not allow books or magazines inside the chamber.

STARTING THE SESSION

As the chamber gets pressurized, like what happens in any airplane,
you are expected to feel an ear popping sensation. Swallowing
water can help reduce discomfort. Once settled, you may choose
to even take a nap. The technician will be available throughout.
After the session, your vitals will be recorded again.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR RISKS?

HBOT is a very safe treatment. Not many side effects or risks have
been associated with the therapy.
Though rare, ear discomfort from pressure changes, injury to ear,
stress to the lungs, low blood sugar and temporary vision changes
are reported. Safety checklist to identify individuals at increased risk
are carried out before starting each HBOT session..

THE SIGMA-36 MONOPLACE

This is the second largest Monoplace system in the industry allowing
patients with a more pleasant treatment experience. The transparent
chamber reduces claustrophobia.
A true 36” internal diameter cylinder
Cool and quiet treatment compartment
Patient controlled temperature
Adjustable stretcher and certified for patients up to 300kg.
Extra wide stretcher with patient safety handrails
Gurney adjustments of 15°, 25°, 35°, 45°, 55°, and 57½°
TV screen for entertainment
Intrinsically safe two-way communications system

THE ADVANTAGE OF A HYPERBARIC CHAMBER AT A HOSPITAL

The Hyperbaric Treatment Unit at ADK Hospital offers the unique
advantage of being within a Tertiary Care referral hospital with
advanced diagnostics and 24/7 access to multi-speciality medical
professionals.
