Nurses: A Force for Change – A vital resource for health: ADK Hospital marks International Nurses Day

May 11, 2014

ADK Hospital have initiated a number of activities to mark the International Nurses Day 2014. The International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. This year's theme for the International Nurses Day set by the International Council of Nurses is, Nurses: A Force for Change – A vital resource for health

According to the ICN, nurses, "as the largest group of health professionals, who are the closest and often the only available health workers to the population, nurses have a great responsibility to improve the health of the population as well as to contribute towards achievement of the global development goals. It is essential that nurses and world leaders focus on the global nursing workforce as a key priority for achieving better health for all." Hence the theme for the day. The focus is on producing a strong and educated nursing workforce throughout the world.

ADK Hospital, gives emphasis on training nurses and is continuously investing in training nurses for higher studies and acquire better skills. In this regard, nurses have been trained in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Even at present 3 nurses are undertaking higher studies in Malaysia under ADK Hospital sponsorship. The Hospital is committed to continue the existing continuing medical education programmes and obtaining other opportunities for the advancement of nurses. According to the ICN,

An educated nurse workforce + a good work environment = high quaility care

This simple, evidence based, equation whether applied at a global level or a local level in the health system is fundermental to understanding how to make the best of the vital resource which is nursing.

Starting today, at ADK Hospital, a number of programmes are arranged for nurses. One of the innovative programmes is the educational poster competition among nurses at the Hospital. This competion will be based on themes for nurses skills and educational development that will eventually lead to improvement of their knowledge in the areas of patient safety and care. In this regard, the themes include, infection control, IV cannulation skills, antenatal and post natal care and exercises.

More direct to the public, the Nurses of ADK Hospital will conduct a free "Eat Healty - Be Active" programme at the Hospital lobby from 9:00am to 12:00pm on 11 May 2014.

The Hospital wishese all nurses a very happy nurses day.
