ARE WE TREATING THE EARLY POSTOPERATIVE PAIN EFFECTIVELY AFTER SPINE SURGERIES?

Dr. Dusooma Abdul Razzag
Consultant in Anesthesia
ADK Hospital, Male'

Introduction:

Pain associated with spine surgeries are severe, especially during the first three days. Adequate pain management during this period increases comfort, satisfaction and functional outcome of the patient. Most common intervention utilized in ADK hospital is a combination of a diverse group of pharmacological agents or multimodal analgesia. It is an effective and safe method for amelioration of pain after spine surgeries.

Methods and Patients:

We performed a retrospective review of medical records of patients and contact via telephone to those who underwent laminectomy and dissectomy from June to September 2018 in ADK hospital.

Results:

There were 20 cases who underwent laminectomy and discectomy from June to September2018 in adk hospital. Analysis of pain, among these patients, had revealed surprising results, where 15% of patients reported no pain, 40% had mild pain, 30% had moderate pain and 15%of patients had severe pain.

Conclusion:

Among the selected group, 55% of the patients reported that the pain had relieved effectively and 45% of patients did not receive quality analgesia despite the balance technique used. Factors which could contribute to these differences could vary from lack of adequate drug dosage and pain assessment, reassessment of pain after each intervention, patient’s belief, level of knowledge as well as previous experience with pain.
Hence it is important to consider these factors to aim for better patient comfort and functional outcome.
