ADK's beginnings with the small medical clinic with a single doctor and an attached pharmacy that was opened in 1987 under the name "Mediclinic" by Mr. Ahmed Nashid and Mr. Hassan Ibrahim, who are brothers-in-law. As the clinic became more and more recognized and its services expanded, the Clinic was upgraded as ADK Medical Centre in 1990.

ADK's involvement and experience in the health care field expanded significantly in the next few years, with the opening of a second pharmacy in 1990 and the separation of its pharmaceutical and medical services in 1994. The medical and clinical operations were brought under ADK Enterprises Private Limited while ADK Company Private Limited concentrated on expanding the pharmaceutical operations.

Today, ADK is first and foremost synonymous with quality private health care in the Maldives, though its interests and activities have begun to diversify in recent years. The Company is proud to be the pioneer of the first private hospital in the country ADK Hospital, which was commissioned in 1996. The 50-bed multi-specialty Hospital is equipped with state-of the-art diagnostic facilities, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

ADK's pharmaceutical operations have expanded significantly over the past 17 years and it is today the largest wholesale distributor as well as retailer of pharmaceutical products in the country. Currently, ADK operates 5 pharmacies in Male', 1 in Villingilli Island and an optical showroom, with exclusive rights to advertise and sell Alcon Pharmaceuticals and Hugo Boss products in the Maldives.

ADK also operates a medical clinic and a pharmacy in the largest tourist resort island in the Maldives, Sun Island Resort

Having established its reputation and supremacy in the private health care field in the Maldives, ADK has been pursuing new challenges in recent years, with a view to diversifying its business ventures.

In 1999, ADK entered into the electronics business by signing a distributor agreement with SHARP

Corporation as its Sole Agent in the Maldives and opened up the Planet Electronics, a showroom for SHARP products in the Maldives.

ADK is also the largest shareholder in the newly revitalized J-SAT Communications, a company

Involved in providing cable TV entertainment to Maldivian homes through its CableVision network.

More recently, ADK has also embarked upon retailing and servicing cellular telephones and accessories through its newly opened shop, “Dialogue.”

ADK today represents one of the most successful, innovative and dynamic business venture in the Maldives, with a staff strength of nearly 250 and a business turnover of over US$ 4 million.
